Psychological type and prayer preferences: a study among Anglican clergy in the United Kingdom
This study applies the framework of Jungian psychological type theory to define eight aspects of prayer preference, namely: introverted prayer, extraverted prayer, sensing prayer, intuitive prayer, feeling prayer, thinking prayer, judging prayer, and perceiving prayer. On the basis of data provided by 1,476 newly ordained Anglican clergy from England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales, eight 7-item scales were developed to access these aspects of prayer preferences. Significant correlations were found between each prayer preference and the relevant aspect of psychological type accessed by the Keirsey Temperament Sorter. These data support the theory that psychological type influences the way in which people pray
Extinction, Persistence, and Evolution
Extinction can occur for many reasons. We have a closer look at the most basic form, extinction of populations with stable but insufficient reproduction. Then we move on to competing populations and evolutionary suicide
Evolution of surname distribution under gender-equality measurements
We consider a model for the evolution of the surnames distribution under a
gender-equality measurement presently discussed in the Spanish parliament (the
children take the surname of the father or the mother according to alphabetical
order). We quantify how this would bias the alphabetical distribution of
surnames, and analyze its effect on the present distribution of the surnames in
Spain
Directing transport by polarized radiation in presence of chaos and dissipation
We study numerically the dynamics of particles on the Galton board of
semi-disk scatters in presence of monochromatic radiation and dissipation. It
is shown that under certain conditions the radiation leads to appearance of
directed transport linked to an underlining strange attractor. The direction of
transport can be efficiently changed by radiation polarization. The
experimental realization of this effect in asymmetric antidot superlattices is
discussed.Comment: revtex, 4 pages, 6 fig
Reaction Time of a Group of Physics Students
The reaction time of a group of students majoring in Physics is reported
here. Strong co-relation between fatigue, reaction time and performance have
been seen and may be useful for academicians and administrators responsible of
working out time-tables, course structures, students counsellings etc.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure
Braincase of panphagia protos (dinosauria, sauropodomorpha)
We describe a partial braincase of the basal sauropodomorph Panphagia protos from the Upper Triassic (midCarnian) horizons of the Ischigualasto Formation. The disarticulated braincase from a subadult individual includes one frontal, both parietals, one prootic, and the supraoccipital. The frontal is longer anteroposteriorly than it is wide transversely, has a small anterolateral process, and an elongate oval depression for the olfactory bulb. The supraoccipital is broader transversely than it is deep dorsoventrally and lacks a pronounced median nuchal eminence. Some braincase features that characterize more derived basal sauropodomorphs are not present in Panphagia, including a broader frontal and reduced anterior tympanic and floccular recesses. Panphagia appears to represent an early stage in the evolution of sauropodomorph dinosaurs. Knowledge-based gene expression classification via matrix factorization
Motivation: Modern machine learning methods based on matrix decomposition techniques, like independent component analysis (ICA) or non-negative matrix factorization (NMF), provide new and efficient analysis tools which are currently explored to analyze gene expression profiles. These exploratory feature extraction techniques yield expression modes (ICA) or metagenes (NMF). These extracted features are considered indicative of underlying regulatory processes. They can as well be applied to the classification of gene expression datasets by grouping samples into different categories for diagnostic purposes or group genes into functional categories for further investigation of related metabolic pathways and regulatory networks.
Results: In this study we focus on unsupervised matrix factorization techniques and apply ICA and sparse NMF to microarray datasets. The latter monitor the gene expression levels of human peripheral blood cells during differentiation from monocytes to macrophages. We show that these tools are able to identify relevant signatures in the deduced component matrices and extract informative sets of marker genes from these gene expression profiles. The methods rely on the joint discriminative power of a set of marker genes rather than on single marker genes. With these sets of marker genes, corroborated by leave-one-out or random forest cross-validation, the datasets could easily be classified into related diagnostic categories. The latter correspond to either monocytes versus macrophages or healthy vs Niemann Pick C disease patients.Siemens AG, MunichDFG (Graduate College 638)DAAD (PPP Luso - Alem˜a and PPP Hispano - Alemanas

Survival, extinction and approximation of discrete-time branching random walks
We consider a general discrete-time branching random walk on a countable set
X. We relate local, strong local and global survival with suitable inequalities
involving the first-moment matrix M of the process. In particular we prove
that, while the local behavior is characterized by M, the global behavior
cannot be completely described in terms of properties involving M alone.
Moreover we show that locally surviving branching random walks can be
approximated by sequences of spatially confined and stochastically dominated
branching random walks which eventually survive locally if the (possibly
finite) state space is large enough. An analogous result can be achieved by
approximating a branching random walk by a sequence of multitype contact
processes and allowing a sufficiently large number of particles per site. We
compare these results with the ones obtained in the continuous-time case and we
give some examples and counterexamples.Comment: 32 pages, a few misprints have been correcte
